Dear Neighbors,
Let me take a moment to introduce myself. I am George Dewey Smalls, born and raised in the
Village of
Freeport and a proud graduate of the Freeport Public School System. Upon graduation I continued my education at the
University of
Delaware, earning a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. During my tenure at the
University of
Delaware I held various leadership positions on campus such as fraternity president (Kappa Alpha Psi), financial aid counselor, peer mediator and student/athlete for the University basketball team.
I currently work as a Senior Advisor to the Deputy County Executive of Economic Development, responsible for various Economic Development programs provided by HUD and dispersed by
Nassau
County. During my professional career, I have worked in hotel management, education, government and social services. I’ve been employed as a senior manager and resident manager for hotel chains such as the Hilton, Holiday Inn, Best Western and private owners.
I helped implement a school-to-work program for
Hempstead
High School students in the travel and tourism industry, and assisted in creating the Hempstead High School Scholarship Fund that helped many students realize their dream of going to college. In addition, I helped students from
Nassau and Queens receive engineering scholarships through the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME).
I’ve been actively involved in politics for many years, both locally and nationally. I had the honor to work at the 1992 Democratic Convention with President Clinton, Labor Secretary Alexis Herman and the late Commerce Secretary, Ron Brown. Working under their guidance sparked my desire and commitment to give more back to my community. In keeping with that philosophy, I founded the Freeport Neighborhood Watch following the tragic death of a young woman in a drive-by shooting in July 2005, and organized the first ever Village-wide crime/drug prevention event to include all neighborhoods in the Village for “National Night Out: America’s Night Out Against Crime.”
I have donated my time and service to many community organizations, including Freeport Pride, Zion Cathedral Summer Basketball Camp, The Officials Working Group, the Community Development Corporation of
Long Island and the Freeport/Roosevelt NAACP.
I have decided to run for Trustee of this Village because we have critical issues facing our community, and the time to address them is now. This is a time for action. This is a time for new bold leadership to build bipartisan partnerships to solve problems in this village. Neighborhoods are in fear because of increased gang activity and the lack of a strong police presence. Village taxes and debts continue to rise. The hard working men and women of Freeport can expect from me a Trustee who will fight for Freeporters to have more access to our Village Government, a true community policing policy with neighbors involvement, and an independent effective voice for fiscal accountability by keeping Village government cost in check.
I believe that together, we need to act with a common purpose to address the challenges of taxes, housing, crime, government waste and community development. That is why I ask for your support and vote. I look forward to meeting you and your family in the months ahead. Thank you.
Sincerely,
George Dewey Smalls
